On Monday, a second major avalanche in Afghanistan struck villages near the Pakistan border, killing at least 45 people. Heavy snow blocked roads to the remote mountain community and restricted rescue efforts. "We are not sure how many died and how many survived. There is no rescue team there yet," said provincial spokesman Mohammad Zareen. A March 4 avalanche killed at least 50 people in a separate Afghan province. Unusually high snowfall has created what analysts are calling the country's worst winter in 30 years.
