On Sunday, a hiker in New Hampshire fell into a crevasse on Mount Washington's Tuckerman Ravine and is believed to have died. Norman Priebatsch, who is in his late 60's, was hiking with three people on the Tuckerman Ravine headwall when he tripped, sliding down a slope and falling into a deep crevasse. Rescue crews lowered a Forest Service Snow Ranger about 50 feet into the crevasse, which was filled with hanging ice, undermined snow, and running water. Visibility was restricted and crews were unable to locate Priebatsch. Rescue efforts have been temporarily suspended due to dangerous snow conditions.
