Americans, Slovenians Take Piolets d'Or

Norwegians get special nod

A trio of Americans who summited the world's second-highest unclimbed mountain and a pair of Slovenians who pioneered a new route on a Pakistani peak took home the 2012 Piolets d'Or this weekend. Mark Richey, Steve Swenson, and Freddie Wilkinson received an award for their four-day ascent of India's Saser Kangri II (24,665 feet) last August. The second award went to Nejc Marcic, 26, and Luka Strazar, 23, who made the third ascent of Pakistan's K7 West via its previously unclimbed northwest face. The committee, headed by American climber and Alpinist editor Michael Kennedy, also recognized Norwegians Bjorn-Eivind Aartun and Ole Lied for their ascent of Torre Egger in Patagonia. Aartun died in an ice climbing accident in February.

Eddy Merckx Caught in Corruption Case

Cycling hero indicted in Belgium

Eddy Merckx, the five-time Tour de France champion from Belgium who was recently awarded the French Legion of Honor, has been indicted on corruption charges. Merckx is said to have sold bicycles from his eponymously named company to the police department in Anderlecht, Belgium in 2007 after learning how much a competitor planned to charge the department. Prosecutors say Anderlecht's chief of police later received a top-end bike at a heavy discount. Merckx sold in the company in 2008. Prosecutors delayed the charges to allow French president Nicholas Sarkozy to present Merckx with the Legion of Honor in December.

Wildfire Rages Near Denver

20 homes destroyed, 1 person found dead

A wildfire burning 25 miles southwest of Denver, Colorado has killed one person, destroyed as many as 25 homes, and is zero percent contained as of Tuesday morning, according to Jefferson County emergency officials. The may have started from a National Forest Service controlled burn in the area last week. It has since grown to more than 3,000 acres, fueled by high winds and dry conditions from a low-snowfall winter. One person was found dead inside a home on Monday, prompting an evacuation order for more than 900 area residents.

Reddit Unites to Find Cyclist's Assailants

Angry motorist attacked rider

A cyclist who was assaulted by two motorists in Sydney, Australia on Saturday has enlisted help from the social news site Reddit in finding his assailants. Chris Moore, 25, was riding down a busy street in Sydney when the driver of a red Mitsubishi started beeping and yelling at him. The passenger threw a battery. “I didn’t do anything to provoke him. I maybe held them up for 15-20 seconds and wasn’t riding that slowly,” Moore wrote. He snapped a photo of the vehicle on his cell phone, although the license plate is covered with a piece of cardboard, before the driver got out and punched him. Police say there is little they can do without a plate number. Commenters have since begun sharing information that might help identify the assailants, including where they last saw the car. As of Tuesday, more than 27,000 people had read Moore's post.
