Three environmental groups have filed suit in federal court against the U.S. Department of State, alleging that government officials failed to prevent oil company TransCanada from beginning work on the KeystoneXL pipeline in Nebraska. The plaintiffs say the the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife services, a branch of the state department, allowed TransCanada to clear a 100-mile section along the pipeline's proposed route in the Nebraska Sandhills. The company has not yet been granted permission to begin work on pipeline, which would run 1,700 miles from Canada to the Gulf coast and is widely opposed by environmentalists.
