Sailing Circumnavigation Record Smashed



A French trimaran on Friday broke the world record for circumnavigating the globe by sailboat after landing in Brest, France three days faster than the previous world record. Skipper Loick Peyron and a crew of 13 sailed the 130-foot trimaran Banque Populaire V for 45 days, 13 hours, and 42 minutes before crossing the Jules Verne Trophy line in Brest. Sierra Club Sues to Stop Homewood



On Thursday, the Sierra Club and Friends of the West Shore filed suit in federal court to block an approved expansion of the Homewood Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe, California. Residents and environmentalists have expressed concern about the environmental impact of plan, which includes new ski-in condos, two lodges, a four-story hotel, and 15,000 square feet of retail space. Vonn's World Cup Win Streak Broken



Battling a lingering stomach illness, U.S. skier Lindsay Vonn finished 4th in downhill and 18th in super-g at the weekend's World Cup races in Bad Kleinkirchheim, Austria, her worst showings in speed events since 2009. Corgi Lost in Avalanche Returns Alive



On Wednesday, a Welsh Corgi believed to have died in a Montana avalanche that killed one of its owners showed up at the motel where his family had stayed. On Saturday, David Gaillard of Bozeman, Montana was tele-skiing with his wife, Kerry, and their dog, Ole, when an avalanche broke above them, killing Dave Gaillard. UCI Strips French Rider of Track Gold



The International Cycling Union has stripped French track cyclist Gregory Bauge and a team of French riders of their gold medals from the 2011 world championships following Bauge's violation of WADA's Whereabouts rule.
