A funny thing started happening around here a few years ago: kids. Colleagues, contributors, athletesthey all started having them. And everybody seemed to be struggling with the same question: How do I raise an active kid while still doing all the stuff I love? So we started asking around. Among other surprising truths, here's what we learned: Hauling two babies on a Third World sojourn isn't (necessarily) insane. There's plenty of adventure to be had in the suburbs. Being forced to run as a child isn't such a terrible thing. Basically, that we should live like we always havejust with more gear.

Great article- I have worked in environmental education for 25 years and work as the Director of Asbury Woods Nature Center in Erie, PA. Definitely preaching to the choir here with Outside readers, but we need more parents to get their kids outdoors. The state of Pennsylvania had a great parks campaign a few years ago- Welcome to Pennsylvania, Now Get Out! (many did'nt get it!) Thanks for this effort to highlight the benefits and ways to get kids outdoors. Brian
