"WHAT'S THE LATEST on the lion bite in Zimbabwe?"
Ted Muhlner's commanding voice fills the room, a spacious seventh-floor office in Boston's financial district decorated with ten flatscreen TVs and little else. The place looks like a stockbroker's warren, but it's not. The 37-year-old Muhlner, a former Navy SEAL with an M.B.A. from Harvard, is senior director of operations for Global Rescue, a seven-year-old company that assists adventure travelers and corporate employees who find themselves in dicey situations far from home. At the moment, surrounded by four paramedics and two ex–military personnel, Muhlner is conducting a 20-minute briefing on the day's workload, a checklist of ongoing operations around the world.
One involves a young, wealthy Mexican hunter who had his arm shredded by a lionness in Zimbabwe. The client is still in the bush, about three hours from the capital, Harare, and he's at risk of developing a serious infection. Because he pays an annual membership fee to Global Rescue, it's the company's job to get him to a hospital ASAP.
"We've sent e-mails and made calls," says Matt Arcovio, a 36-year-old Global Rescue medic. "Nothing."
Muhlner tells the medic to contact an air- ambulance service he trusts, which will rush the patient to the Avenues Clinic in Harare, a reputable facility where his wounds will be cleaned and stitched.
Next: an American trekker at 14,000 feet in Tuli Kharka, Nepal, near Mount Everest, is coughing up green crud and experiencing shortness of breath, possible signs of pulmonary edema. Knowing an evacuation is likely, Muhlner reminds the same medic that they have a contract with a local helicopter company.
Listening quietly off to the side, security manager Dan Bayer, another former SEAL who's known around here as the Pit Bull, chomps on a piece of raw broccoli. In an office a few feet away, the company's founder, Dan Richards, a 37-year-old former Wall Street banker, hammers away at his keyboard. It's business as usual.
Chief paramedic Derek Rappaport, 40, a former firefighter with softball-size biceps, turns and addresses me in a thick Boston accent. "We do a lot of bites," he says. "Dog, lion, cobra, monkey."

RE: the recovery of Joe Puryear's body, w/o David Gottlieb, a mt ranger for almost 20 yrs and Joe's wife Michelle, Joe's body would still be in Tibet. GR made a few phone calls. It was David, w/ Michelle's assistance, the CMA, and their tour operator that facilitated a quick recovery in extremely poor weather conditions. In this case, GR was just a "911 call center". Then, they charged $25k for making a few phone calls, on top of the $5k rescue coverage both David and Joe had through the AAC. Th
Flag ThisThis comment is incorrect regarding both the services Global Rescue provided and the associated costs. Neither the Puryear family nor any of the other climbers were charged for the services provided by Global Rescue. All costs were covered by the deceased's AAC membership. For the benefit of our members, we do not publicly comment on the details of the missions we perform, but the above comment is also incorrect regarding the scope of the services provided.... (continued)
Flag ThisAdditional information posted by Michelle Puryear regarding this tragedy is posted here: http://climbtibet.blogspot.com/2010/12/words-cannot-express.html We extend our deepest condolences and sympathy to Michelle and her family during this difficult time. John Moretti Global Rescue LLC
Flag ThisThe entirety of my post was cut off: The $25K was charged and then refunded because and itemize list of services rendered was requested. And the other details are correct.
Flag ThisThese are not easy topics. My sympathies go out to Michelle Puryear during what I know remains a very difficult time. Dozens of rescues have been accomplished for AAC members over the years we have worked with Global Rescue. Member satisfaction has been high. In the Puryear case, GR acknowledged Gottlieb's experience and desire to remain in control. GR negotiated and paid for the helicopter as part of the AAC benefit. To be clear, GR received no payment for any service in this case.
Flag ThisBe humble, do good work and give credit where credit is due. Perhaps if these three tenets were emphasized at the Harvard Business School and in the marketing departments of our military elite, all of the posturing and political B.S. would be unnecessary. I am very appreciative of the role Global Rescue played in the recovery of my husbands body.
Flag ThisI was the Medjet member in 2006 who Global Rescue evacuated from the Colca Canyon in Peru after I fell off of the canyon trail. To set the record straight, Medjet refused to help me and the results could have been fatal without Global Rescue. I'm disappointed that O.M. would cast doubt that the incident happened. It did. Medjet abandoned me when I needed them. Global Rescue evacuated me by helicopter to an ambulance plane, then to a hospital in Lima, and arranged for my return home to Texas.
Flag ThisAs the outside counsel for the Association of Surfing Professionals World Surf Tour (and an avid surf/ski/climbing traveler on my own time), I have seen many things go very heavily awry in third and fourth world countries. Give me the brash, confident, ex-SEAL operator any day over some "dispatcher" in a call center who hasn't ever held a dying person in his arms or pinched off an arterial bleed. It is all about getting the patient extracted and home. Big ego -- huh -- who cares!
Flag ThisBlackstone, let set the record straight. Global Rescue worked out a deal with your expedition provider during the planning phase that, were something to happen, they would give GR first dibs on the mission. In fairness, Medjet never even got the chance to fulfill their contract. This is a perfect example of the type of underhanded tactics Dan Richards like to use.
Flag ThisDan Richards is an investment banker, nothing more. The next time you go see your financial advisor or broker, think about wether or not you would want him coming to your rescue. What is all this about SEALs? GR is not taking down targets in the Korengal Valley, they are only making phone calls on your behalf. Do SEALs dial phones and do Google searches faster than anyone else? Dan hires former SOF operators only because he wants to surround himself with people he never had the courage to be.
Flag ThisPersonally, I would prefer that Global Rescue was not a family company. That just seems odd to me. CEO and President is Dan Richards. The VP is Stuart Richards, Dan's father. Another VP, who is also the medical director is Dan's Uncle, Arnold Seid (who is located in CA, not Boston). Chief Counsel is Dan's Wife. Where does the family line stop and business begin?
Flag ThisThink about it. If the US government, who has access to the most elite rescue assets in the world (like the Pararescuemen who routinely rescue SEALs) and they cannot be everywhere at once, then how can a privately held enterprise like Global Rescue be able to rescue you wherever in the world you find trouble? Even if they send one of their own people, he will not be able to get to you until the situation has resolved itself. Do their employees have visa's for every country in the world?
Flag ThisI don't want a bunch of mercenaries coming to get me! I find it appalling that companies like Global Rescue are allowed to operate. In 2006, Global rescue hired a mercenary company, AKE, to try to recover people from the war in Lebanon. After bribing many Lebanese officials, the people Global Rescue was sent after were actually evacuated by the US government, not Global Rescue. This is just one of many accounts where Global Rescue is taking credit for things they did not do.
Flag ThisFrom the Global Rescue Contract: 1.6. Termination: GR reserves the right to refuse service and terminate accounts, for reasons including, but not limited to, a belief by GR, in its absolute discretion, that user conduct violates applicable law or is harmful to the interests of GR, its members, partners, suppliers, or other users, or for any other reason, at GR's sole discretion, with or without cause. What exactly are you paying for?
Flag ThisIf this guy is an investment banker, then no doubt he is trying to build up the company so he can sell it for a bundle; therefore, you can bet the farm he is misrepresenting himself and his company. Why all the enemies, they ask? Probably because he has earned them.
Flag ThisThe employees Dan Richards says he fired actually resigned. They all resigned in protest to Dan's unethical behavior and his lack of integrity (Yes, we can prove this, would you like us to). Perhaps the author should have dug a little deeper. Why was an article written on a single company anyway, and not the entire industry? This smells of a good PR company pulling the wool over the eyes of a reputable magazine. Shame all around.
Flag ThisA great deal of the "rescues" done by GR aren't done by their employees, but rather contracted out local entities, most found by google search. GR would constantly overstate their capabilities routinely exaggerating about having African based rescue teams, planes that could be wheels up in minutes etc. Visits by potential clients were dog and pony shows where the staff was shifted about the office to make it appear the operations team was larger than it was. That's lack of integrity.
Flag ThisAs someone who has relied on Global Rescues help, I can tell you that they deliver when I needed it most. I have a family membership and when my wife got a mysterious illness in South Africa, medical advice from GR's experts and the willingness to evacuate her at a moments notice was worth every penny. Global Rescue, rescues. They do it better than anyone. They come and get you if you're hurt, sick or even dead. I hope I never need it again, but I'm glad GR is there.
Flag ThisI remember the "Shows" Dan would put on for clients. One time he even had his mom come in and pretend to be an employee. Funny stuff. Though, the lack of integrity I am talking about is when he asked about running guns into foreign countries. Dan imagined himself as some type of "lord of war". Sure, if you are a big enough name, like Steve House, they will send somebody, that's just good business. Which GR employee tied into a rope and rescued House? Exactly. Posturing is all they can
Flag ThisDoug, I am sure GR "said" they would come get your wife, but did they? GR's standard operating procedure is to say it is to dangerous, or you are to sick, to be moved at the time of the incident. Then they make you lay in the third world hospital until they can figure out the cheapest way possible to get you home which, usually means, you return home on an $150.00 upgraded version of your return ticket. I am glad you had a good experience, you are one of few.
Flag ThisHow do you "Rescue" someone while sitting in a chair behind a computer? Has this Dan Richards guy ever actually laid his hands on a person he "rescued". I doubt it. As the post below says, he is a banker, nothing more. He will always just be a money guy. And exactly what do SEALs know about civilian rescues? Doesn't inspire me to get a membership.

Flag ThisI'm hardly disgruntled. I had a good time working at GR with some great people. I just happened to find some of their tactics less than above board and honorable, and when dealing with people's lives and promising to keep them safe, I found unacceptable.
Flag ThisRichards went out of his way to ensure that I was safe while teaching in Haiti--both when I was safe, and when I suddenly wasn't. That is what makes Dan & GR different. It isn't just about crisis, it is about the integrity of the entire experience. When you feel safe, you do better things for the world-- and he knows that. After getting in a car accident in Haiti, I spoke with Richards on the phone as GR prepped all aspects of my trip home. He was well connected in Haiti, knowledgeable and calm.
Flag ThisI could not agree with you more Holly.

Flag ThisGeisler said the college spoke with them every half hour. Within moments of the start of Friday's protests, which included Egyptian army tanks rolling into Alexandria, the college decided the students were no longer safe. Staff efforts and another security firm couldn't get the kids out, so they turned to Global Rescue. "They had security agents there within three hours of the signing of the contract. I don't know how they did that, honestly," a relieved Geisler said. - Boston Herald 2/2/11
Flag ThisSo let me get this straight, GR flew operations personnel from Boston to Cairo in three hours? Either they have the worlds fastest plane, they used mercenaries (again), or they lied. If all you need is someone to make phone calls on your behalf, then GR will probably do. Notice they made the college sign a contract before moving. Dan loves to catch folks in a bad position and then try to milk them for everything they are worth.

Flag ThisI heard a friend of Dan's and GR member had an emergency with his child in Qatar, and Dan made him wait a week before bringing him and his sick child home because a private jet and accompanying medical staff was too expensive. I was told GR instead brought them home on a commercial flight after making them stay in Qatar for a week! If this is how he treats a friend, imagine how he will treat you. Perhaps Dan would like to join the conversation and comment on the issues that have been brought up.
Flag ThisI can't help but notice that all the "rescues" are really just brokered evacuations (let us call a spade a spade). It seems that most of what GR has done for members has been over the phone hand holding and flying people commercially. From the posts below, GR has only brokered evacuations and airplanes for fee for service customers. It seems like GR only calls an air ambulance, private security or hospital on your behalf. What keeps you from doing this for yourself?

Flag ThisWow! Apparently there are passionate voices on both sides of this isle! I do think using the word "Rescue" is a bit strong. Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers rescue people, the Mountain Rescue Association rescues people, firefighters and police rescue people. These are all people who put their lives on the line for others. They deserve the recognition for performing rescues because they place their lives on the line. How exactly do GR personnel put themselves in harms way for others?
Flag ThisI don't know anything about Global Rescue, but I have been a member over at Medjet Assist for a few years now. They flew to Baghdad to pick up a engineer friend of mine who was working for the military and had a heart issue. Then they didn't charge him a dime, everything was covered by his membership. Has Global Rescue ever rescued anyone out of Iraq?

Flag ThisI have to agree with Dave S below. A few issues ago Outside did a great article on PTSD issues that arise in the volunteer mountain rescue community. These people preform true rescues and they suffer because of it. To say that Global Rescue, or any company for that matter, rescues people is like giving a 911 dispatcher credit for the efforts of a firefighter or police officer.
