Bike, Hike, and Paddle Alaska Top to Bottom
I live and play in Alaska now, but my larger goal has always been to explore as far North in Alaska as I can. Along with trip mates Jill Weitz and AJ Peters, we'll start in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, about 900 miles from Juneau on the Arctic Ocean, and spend at least 30 days venturing through three national parks. We’ll kick off the adventure by biking south down the rugged Dalton Highway to Gates of the Arctic National Park, which sees less than a thousand visitors a year. Next, we’ll head to Denali National Park to backpack and make a quick stop in Fairbanks to celebrate our halfway point. Continuing on to Wrangell St. Elias National Park, we’ll take a take a flight deep into the wilderness for another backpacking trip. Our fantastic voyage will end by sea, when we kayak from Haines to Juneau. I’m eager to see just how much this grant will allow us to grow. Music will be replaced with bird songs and roaring rivers, hundreds of miles of biking will become our solstice. Juneau is that final destination; how long it takes us to get there won’t matter as much as how far we’ve come.
