No Timberland - what happened?? They are super conscious of the environment - shorts are worn to work and all dogs go to work...

Would love to see River Odysseys West (ROW) on this too - very well run company with great people (not an employee here but have done a few of their trips).

Backcountry.com didn't make the list? I would expect to see them in the top 5? They have more perks than most of these companies. They are hiring if you're looking and the corporate office is located in Park City, UT (outdoor mecca). http://www.backcountrycorp.com/corporate/section/2/jobs.html

If this is anything like some of the Best Employer Awards in Canada, companies have to enter to be considered. Often the application process is lengthy so companies only run every other year, or when it coincides with their employee engagement surveys. It may just be that companies like Timberland, Backcountry.com, and Nike didn't apply this year. It would be great if Outside could share the criteria.

I read this list with interest but find that some of the winners are actually environmental losers. Chesapeake Energy?!?!$*& I'm glad to hear that their employees are happy with their free margaritas offered by CEO Aubrey McClendon....but wonder how Outside squares that with the highly controversial and destructive practice of fracking. Look into what Mr. McClendon is doing to towns across the country like Lake Texoma or Saugatuck Michigan before you toast him. Look at the environmental destruction he is causing. I'm glad his employees can exercise in a 72,000 sq ft gym and listen to country music while on the clock but what about the toll this company's activities take in small towns around this country. Does that not count for anything? Shame on you Outside!

I'm with Self! I work for NIKE and I'm sure there are a lot of great place to work but I love my company and I'm not sure how many people can truly say that.

I'm shocked Hallmark Cards is not a part of the Top 50 companies to work for. It's always been a dream of mine to work for a creative company and to enrich people's lives through an outlet that evokes our emotions. Send a card today to someone you love or someone that could use a pick-me-up.

I'd love to see Outside give props to the agencies that manage the land that everyone uses all that gear on. I'm a proud employee of the US Forest Service and work hard to manage the over 400 miles of trail and almost 40,000 acre wilderness on my district. Also more emphasis on supporting volunteer organizations that help us keep it going. I'm pretty sure I've got one of the top 50 jobs out there.....

im thinking timberland didnt make the cut as it has recently been acquired by VF and thusly folded into the evil realm of increased margins, poorer product, and leverage of brand equity as opposed to building equity through authenticity and innovation. sell more crap - make money off volume.... http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2011/06/13/vf-corporation-to-buy-timberland/

+1 Z-BEN. Rally Software is an amazing company, growing like mad, fun, family-friendly, and super outdoorsy. But how did they drop from #6 to not even in top 50?

How about giving a list of all companies evaluated. Even if they aren't in the top 50, they are probably better than where i work now!!

What age group criteria was used? Anything listed for workers over 40? Most of the companies sound like they are geared toward 20-30 somethings.
