The West Ridge Route and Team Members

Multiple teams of climbers will attempt the West Ridge this May, following the route first climbed by Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld in 1963. Outside senior editor Grayson Schaffer is embedding with the team from Eddie Bauer to send back dispatches and photos. Here's a look at the route and the team.

THE ROUTE
Classic Cover

Barry Bishop’s 1963 photograph (see sidebar) of Hornbein and Unsoeld approaching the West Ridge was shot just above Camp III.

Camps
While the 1963 expedition used five camps, the Eddie Bauer team will skip Camp V.

Hornbein Couloir
A steep, narrow gulley of snow and ice above Camp V guards the summit pyramid. The couloir was first climbed by Hornbein and Unsoeld in 1963.

THE TEAM
Jake Norton

Trip leader Jake Norton has summited Everest three times and completed more than 20 expeditions in Tibet and Nepal.

David Morton
Guide David Morton has summited Everest six times and taken more than a dozen expeditions to 8,000-meter peaks.

Brent Bishop
After twice summiting Everest, Bishop founded Sagarmatha Environmental Expedition, a group that cleans trash from the mountain.

Charley Mace
Filmmaker Charley Mace was a cameraman and guide on the Everest expedition that helped blind climber Erik Weihenmayer reach the summit.
