    Northstar, California

    BEST FOR: Families

Shaun White’s home mountain features the Burton Snowboard Academy, which teaches tricks to youngsters. There’s also the Ultimate Four lesson, with no more than four students per class. After skiing, the kids can roast s’mores—and the parents sip hot toddies—at the skating rink in Northstar Village.

    Aspen, Colorado

    BEST FOR: Nightlife

Escobar, an airplane-shaped dance club, is always rocking house beats. Meanwhile, the Belly Up, a 450-person venue, fills with twenty and thirtysomethings on most nights and brings in acts like Snoop Dogg, John Prine, and Jane’s Addiction. For the pub crowd, there’s Finbarr’s, an upscale Irish joint. And the skiing, of course, is just as varied and awesome.

    Breckenridge, Colorado

    BEST FOR: Sidecountry Access

In the past, Breckenridge’s reputation has centered on its wild party scene. The place still goes off, but this year it adds another dimension: 543 acres of new terrain on Peak 6, including a section of cliffy hike-to chutes with 40-degree drops.

    Silverton Mountain, Colorado

    BEST FOR: Experts

The guides at the rawest resort in Colorado continue to cook up gnarly additions to their high-adrenaline menu of offerings. This year they add overnight heli trips, during which you and a guide are dropped atop a remote peak to spend two days hiking, skiing, and winter camping in the San Juan range ($429).

    Squaw Valley, California

    BEST FOR: Spring Skiing

Squaw folks like to call the resort the spring-skiing capital of America. They’re not wrong. Hot sun during the day combined with cold nights makes for perfect corn snow come morning. When it turns to slush, join the girls in bikinis sipping cocktails poolside atop the mountain. And in an amphitheater at the base of the KT-22 lift, bands like the Wailers and Jurassic 5 jam until the sun goes down.
