Can you rely on thunderstorms for drinking water?

How frequent are summer thunderstorms in the desert? Can you rely on that as a source of fresh water?

They are quite frequent, but they are very regional. I have seen it rain by my house and three miles away at my friend's house there isn't a drop on the ground. The monsoon season begins in July and runs into September in much of the Southwestern U.S.
