Commuter Bike Review

BELOVED RAPHA EVERY DAY
$5,195

THE SELL: The full package—style, speed, and comfort.
THE TEST: OK, so it's a commute bike you'd never dare lock up. But with fast all-rounder geometry and excellent handling, this special Rapha edition of the Every Day (regularly $4,175) rolls even better than it looks. And it looks great. The strategic tube selection in the hand-built chromoly frameset—which sports an integrated haul handle above the bottom bracket—rendered it responsive yet smooth, and the five-speed internal rear hub provided good range for climbing hills and flying along the flats. Fenders, a minimalist rear rack, and supple 32mm Grand Bois tires sweeten the deal.
THE VERDICT: If you're in the market for a comfortable townie ride for commuting and general cruising but also want a bike that will get up on it, this is your dream rig. belovedcycles.com; rapha.cc
VERSATILITY: 4 (out of 5)
COMFORT: 5

The low-profile yet mega-powerful Paul Touring Canti brakes on the Beloved stopped us on a dime when necessary but offered such fine modulation that we relished playing with them on descents.

This is your dream gig if you have a place to lock it up inside at your destination. For +$5000, that's a price everyday commuter. I wouldn't lock this up out of sight for more than 20 mins! As we all know, all locks are tamper-able. Some just take more time than others.

Nice design, but, echoing the comment above, I'm certain that in NYC the bike would be long gone before the equivalent in taxi fares was used up.

There is no need to spend $5,000 on a commuter bike. You can buy a perfectly good one for under a $1,000. There is no need to spend $5,000 on any bike. I say this as a former wrench. I think your reviewers got overwhelmed by the shiny new toy.

I agree with above. Outside come down from the clouds my friends and let the reps for the $5,000 commuter line sell their own.

$5K wow, I could by $50 used bikes and give them out to my community for that kind of coin and make a huge impact... get real people. Lets see a review of the best bike under $500 please.

Agree with all above. I'm tired of review lists featuring $3000 - $5000 bicycles. That is the marketing machine at work from these manufacturers...a $600 bike can be magnificent. $1,000 gets a pro tour quality bicycle that will be indistinguishable from the actual pro bikes for 99% of the public. Put a Trek Madone sticker on a Trek 1200 if it makes you feel better, but the engine is what matters most.

Once again outside magazine gear review features nothing but the items on the high end of the price spectrum. It would be nice if the reviewer actually did some research and gave the advantages and disadvantages of products in low, mid and high price ranges. As it is now its really just a glorified advertisement rather than a review.

I just picked up a Trek SOHO DLX for a little over $1250 total incl tax from my local LBS. That's not really light on the wallet but it's lexx than a quarter of the price of the BELOVED RAPHA EVERY DAY mentioned above. The Trek has belt drive, an 8 speed internal hub, rack and fenders and front disk brakes and weighs a little over 28 lbs with a 20" frame. It is all I could hope for in an urban machine. I came here hoping to see a review of it or similarly equipped bikes from Raleigh, etc.

Just stunning to drool over.Screw a auto,I covet this item.

I agree with almost all of the above comments. This is not something within a reasonable price range for most of us. I look for the most bang for the buck.

These reviews become more and more worthless, and therefore the magazine as well. Who can spend $5000 on a bike? Even if you make enough money to, most people in that case have family, etc. and are not going to spend $5000 on a bike. Clearly, magazines like Outside are just getting some kind of kickback or ad fees by including such high end products in there reviews... really pretty lame IMO.

Also the rack is useless for commuting with a laptop-sized pannier bag.

Let's see: Here we have a $5000 "commuter" bike that lacks the following: A front rack A back rack that can't handle a pannier large enough to take a laptop Doesn't have the gear range to handle long and/or steep hills when it's fully loaded Handlebars that restrict the number of riding positions Why would I pay 3 times as much to have a less capable ride than my fully equipped Cannondale T800? Folks, if you want useful information instead of the toy wish list found here, head over to the Adventure Cycling or Bicycling web sites, which have a lot more comprehensive information and a list of commuter bikes over a large price range.

I have the Tricross Comp and it is one great ride for my daily trip to work and back year round. Much less expensive and tougher. Its over kill for most users however but a serious commuter needs a bike that easy on the body and realiable. The above bike seem to me more about looks than anything else.

A lot of great comments on here! I'd love to see outside start reviewing useful utilities for the everyman!

Totally agree with the above comments about wanting reviews of bikes that are more affordable to the average person. Most people who have that much to spend on a bike use a chauffer anyway!

I used to buy Outside for gear review, but have to agree with many that have already commented on the focus on high-end gear only. I would't buy a Rapha while there are so many great bikes out there for far less with far more and better features.

You guys remind me of those car magazines that only test $100,000 cars and up. Waste of time for the average person. I bought a Trek bike 3 years ago for $450.00. I use it 3-4 days a week. Works great, reliable and comfortable. Great commuter bike. Get your head out of the clouds and return to earth.

I could afford that bike and still, I would never buy it. And the main reason is that I would never feel comfortable leaving it locked up while I browse a store or a market. My wife and I are new to biking and are currently looking for those style of bikes and no bike shop has even suggested anything close to that price range. Would it be reasonable to ask Outside to do a review of $900-1500 bikes?

$ 5000 commuting bike?? It's a joke, right? You can pick up a decent used bike (look for a nice frame) for a tiny fraction of that sum, put some nice components on it and the reworked package probably would be less than $ 500. That's what I have. The bike looks like crap but rides nicely and I don't need to worry about it being stolen.

Why doesn't outside magazine post bikes that are reasonable in price. The price of this bike is insane for somebody to buy, it's another reason im not continuing my subscription to the magazine. People want to know whats good for the price.
