Q: What are the best winter-running pants?

What are the best running pants to wear in the dead of winter when the wind is blowing and the snow is flying?

A:

When the wind is blowing and the snow is flying? I'd recommend sitting in front of the TV with a pair of sweatpants on.

I'm a bit pigeon-toed, which means my feet tend to snag on loose material when I run, so I prefer tights. I've also found that I don't lose much heat off my legs, at least compared to my upper body or even my arms, and unless it drops much below 10 degrees I generally stick with mid-weight tights.

My go-to tights work for both cycling and running. If you both ride and run, my first recommendation is to check out Performance Bicycle's house-brand Radiator Tights ($50). They come without a cycling chamois and are made from a stretchy polyester-Spandex blend that resists wind and wicks moisture. They're warm, but I've used them comfortably in a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions. Otherwise, take a look at the following three options from Nike, Arc'teryx, and Pearl Izumi.

As a 40 year old guy, regardless of how fit I am, I think(no, I DO) look ridiculous in tights. After a few years of searching/ experimenting, I found the REI Airflyte Running Pants. They are loose enough that I still retain my dignity, but form fitting enough to work good on long cold runs. Don't mean to plug any one product.

I have a 10 yr old HIND "Munich" style running tight which is loose fit. They're not thick, I normally have my long john pant underneath, when it gets real cold I put on a light running short to protect my vitals. With my life style, if needs to be economical.

I like tights since they keep the cold air off during the winter yet wick during the summer. I use a pair of CW-X compression tights for the most part.

As someone who doesn't like tights, I am a huge fan of the Pearl Izumi winter pants. They are fitted without being "tight". The articulated knees provide a superior fit. The wind blocker front keeps me warm & the knit back keeps me cool. They are my "go to" for anything below 30ºF or wind/snow conditions. Love em!

If you want something that really protects from wind and rain I highly recommend SportHill's XC pant. I've used them for several years (running, hiking, biking) and love them. They're not tights but they fit close enough to the body to be used for biking as well. They're tapered with long ankle zippers so they don't flap around or let the cold air in. Check out MileMarkerSports or Amazon or go straight to the SportHill web site. You'll get different prices at each site. If you double up with the SportHill Northwind under briefs you'll never be cold. BTW, I have no affiliation with SportHill but after looking for the perfect winter running pant for years I finally found these at the local L.L. Bean store. I love these pants so wanted to share with other outdoor enthusiasts.
