The 7 Best Resort Jackets of 2012

Why pony up for a new ski jacket? Because that $90 lift ticket won’t be much use if your old parka is soaked through. We donned 50 new models on chairlifts in Wyoming, British Columbia, Oregon, Alaska, and the Italian Dolomites last winter to pick the ones that keep you warm and dry all day. The biggest development: many manufacturers have adopted waterproof-breathable fabrics, such as Polartec’s NeoShell and Mountain Hardwear’s Dry-Q Elite, that rely on air-permeability—i.e., they’re not windproof—to move perspiration out of the shell. But with a jacket built for riding lifts, the old rules still apply. And this year’s best in-bounds jackets, be they packable microweight shells or waterproof down parkas, still feature powder skirts, longer cuts that protect from blowing snow, generous hoods that fit over your helmet, pockets to keep your wallet, keys, and whatnot, and fabric tough enough to withstand a thrashing in the trees.

Helly Hansen Odin Mountain

Clear out your closet. Here's one jacket to replace them all.  With three layers of light, stretchy Helly Tech fabric, the one-pound Odin is sleek and durable enough for alpine guides but still loaded with techy on-piste features. The zip-off powder skirt, helmet-compatible hood, clear pass pocket, and raised shoulder padding for carrying skis made it the top choice with in-bounds testers from the Tetons to the Cascades. And in sidecountry, Recco reflectors help ski patrol locate you if things go awry, while big pit zips and mesh-backed waist pockets double the venting for high-output ascents. Our only gripe is the price, though there's more value than at first glance, since the Odin is just packable and lightweight enough to double as a backpacking jacket in warmer months. 1.1 lbs
