The 7 Best Running Shoes of Winter 2012

Running shoes used to come in two basic flavors: floppy racing flats for pros and those blessed with a perfect gait or, for the rest of us, overbuilt models with fat, cushioned heels and a substantial forward lean. In the wake of the barefoot-running fad, however, many runners and running-shoe companies have realized they can quickly improve form and efficiency (and prevent injuries) by simply shrinking a shoe’s heel. Compared with traditional trainers, which actively encourage heel-strike running with heels up to eight millimeters higher than the toes, a raft of new designs have cut that difference to six millimeters or less. In these midfoot-strike-promoting runners, the heel doesn’t get in your way as you land, and the reduced wedge of foam saves weight. But if you’re happily set in your ways, don’t worry: there are still plenty of plush traditional shoes out there. Then again, nearly every one of our heel-striking testers who tried the new midfoot shoes became a convert.

Finally, a midfoot running shoe for the masses. With a pillowy tongue, exceptionally soft and accommodating midsole foam, wide forefoot, and wear-it-all-day comfort, the Cortana feels like a traditional high-mileage trainer. What's missing? Only the built-up heel: there's a scant four millimeters of drop between the hell and the marshmallow-soft forefront, so the flexy Cortana gently fosters a more barefootlike midfoot-striking gait, without the harsh impact on the feet. And because the forefoot is close to the ground, the shoe still feels reasonably responsive. "I can't think of a softer shoe that still runs fast," our 10K specialist wrote. The fit? "Like a slipper" was a common tester refrain. Speedy minimalists might find it a touch heavy (and squishy!), but that just means that for most progressive-leaning runners, it's probably just about perfect. 11.2 oz; 4mm heel drop

Responsiveness: 4 (Out of 5)

All of these winter trail running shoes picked are awful. Does no one at Outside run in the winter? Running trails with shoes with such high heels is asking for an ankle sprain or worse. Low to the ground with aggressive traction is what's needed. Gore-tex is nice but is not needed. water proof socks work much better. Inov 8 makes light, low heel shoes with super aggressive lugs. You should feture these not those other pieces of junk.

Where does it say "trail running shoe test"? I see on the right hand side where it states Winter 2012 ROAD RUNNING. I have the Blur33 and love them - I don't run on the trails right now but will in the spring with another new pair of Blur's.
