The 7 Best Running Shoes of Winter 2013

While the minimalism trend has shifted the center of the running universe toward lighter, more neutral designs with lower heels, shoe buyers are still faced with one crucial question: Performance or comfort? If your goal is just to cruise to a slimmer gut and stronger legs, you’ll likely do fine with the soft, thick midsoles and higher heels of classic running shoes. They’re damn comfortable. (And hey, not everyone was born to run.) But if improving form and setting new PRs is what you’re after, you’ll need to choose wisely. Want to boost your speed? Look for lower weight, less foam, and a latex-perfect fit. Greater efficiency? Steer toward firmer, closer-to-the ground forefeet, which won’t make you feel as if you’re running in sand. Better mechanics? Get a shoe with a slightly lower heel, which will help you land on your midfoot. On trails, where each step is different, how well a shoe’s upper conforms to your foot is even more important. Look especially for a locked-down feeling in the heel (for rotational stability) and in the midfoot (to stop forward and side slipping), so you’re not washing around inside your shoes on roller-coaster terrain.

Find the Best

GEAR OF THE YEAR: This is the most winter-specific running shoe we’ve ever seen, with an above-the-ankle gaiter, glove-friendly one-pull laces, ankle pads to prevent snowshoe bruising, and nine carbide-metal spikes embedded in those big snow lugs for goatlike grip even on black ice. While all of this makes pounding out miles in the depths of winter fun, the reason the Snowcross CS earned our highest honor is that incorporated underneath that water-resistant gaiter is a real running shoe—Salomon’s superfast, nimble Speedcross, which won our Gear of the Year nod in 2010. This winterized version has the same racing DNA: fast, extremely smooth, and low to the ground for great trail feel. Most impressive: despite all the winter armor, it still weighs less than some summer-only shoes. 12.7 oz; 11-mm heel-to-toe drop
