Performance-Enhancing Sheets

But, seriously, can what you sleep on really make a difference?

Athletes typically spend a lot of time on training and nutrition, running intervals, lifting weights, chugging protein shakes, and in some cases juicing on “supplements”—some legal some not—to make them stronger and faster. What a lot of athletes forget about is the importance of sleeping.

Sleep is recovery time, and whether you’re an Olympic athlete or a weekend warrior, giving your body a chance to recover is key to athletic performance. The American Sleep Research Institute says that while a person sleeps, his body is rejuvenated, his cells are repaired, his immune system is strengthened, and his mental functions are sharpened. Sheex, maker of performance bed sheets, believes that the true secret to speed, grace, and excellence is between the sheets.

Developed by two former women’s college basketball coaches who knew the benefits of technical clothing for athletics, Sheex were designed to help everyone, not just elite athletes, get the benefits of a good night’s sleep.

The premise: Sheex are more breathable, which helps your body regulate temperature, and prevents your sleep from being interrupted. Temperature and sleep quality are closely related. Human body temperature drops slightly just before sleep. According to Sheex, cotton sheets trap heat and can wake you up. Because ultra high-gauge, knit polyester spandex Sheex breathe better, they let your body temperature fluctuate without disturbing your REM.

Sheex release some heat while still keeping you warm and cozy, simultaneously wicking away moisture, a bonus for those who tend to sweat at night. Sleeping better and longer improves heart rate, mood, weight loss, energy and athletic performance.

Sheex are soft to the touch, and this tester—a diehard cotton-lover—has been catching some ZZZs on them for several months now. Bonus: These sheets won’t wrinkle, shrink or fade, and they’re pull- and pill- resistant.

And we’re not the only one that liked them. A recent Twitter shoutout by WWE announcer Justin Roberts caused a spike in sales.

Our evaluation was not terribly scientific, but tests at North Carolina State University Center for Research on Textile Protection and Comfort show that Sheex transfer body heat two times faster than cotton bedding for a comfortable night's sleep. Available now, $99 and up.
