In 1929 the celebrated General Nevil Macready asked Ray Ban for a new type of air force eyewear that would protect pilots from glare at high altitudes while at the same time ensuring their clear field of vision. The company developed lenses that could block out a high proportion of visible light. The first publicly available model released had the signature Ray Ban Aviator shape we all know today.
