Bavarian hunter Josef Hohenester got avalanched twice while carrying a deer back from the mountains. The deer provided flotation, preventing Hohenester from being buried in the snow. Peter Aschauer bought the idea from Hohenester and created the first ABS device. It was worn like a backpack, had a cable pull, and weighed 8.8 pounds without a pack. The nylon-weave poly-lined balloon bag, inflated with 150 liters of nitrogen, was the first airbag avalanche protection.
