The 7 Best Backcountry Packs of 2013

Think of your pack as a closet on your back. And just as there’s no right way to fold your clothes, there’s no single pack that’s suited to everyone. But allow us to offer some advice. Let’s start with size. If you’re looking for something to bring along on shorter sidecountry missions (a snack and avalanche gear) or for resort riding (lunch and an extra layer), 15 to 20 liters will do. Twenty to 35 liters is ideal for most day trips, 35 to 50 for technical terrain or hut outings. Tip: To accommodate the extra layers necessary for a winter excursion, you generally need 10 liters more than for a similar trip in summer. Next, consider pack styles. Top-loaders are simple, light, and best for maximizing space, whereas packs with multiple pockets are easier to organize. We’re big fans of hip-belt storage—hello, energy bar at your fingertips—and dedicated spots for avalanche tools. As for insulated hydration sleeves, their value depends on where you live. In our experience, tubes freeze when temperatures drop into single digits. Finally, what’s the best way to carry your skis or snowboard?

Find the Best

GEAR OF THE YEAR: We needed to consult the manual to figure out how to make the most of the 38-liter Quintic’s unique triangular design. But it was worth the effort. The pack is cleverly divided into five large zippered pockets: two wing out along the hip belt, and the others hold the weight low, to prevent jostling. Boards rack into just about any configuration (skis vertical, A-frame, or diagonal; a snow-board horizontal or vertical), leaving the main pocket accessible—a rare engineering feat. We usually prefer something simpler and more streamlined, but every now and then a pack comes along that blows our boots off. This year the Quintic is that pack. 3.2 lbs
