The 6 Best Ski and Snowboard Helmets of 2013

It’s all about fit. Too loose and your head is a yolk inside an eggshell. Too tight and you’ll get migraines from all the pressure points. Most of today’s helmets have features that allow you to maximize fit. It’s true that all those dials and straps add weight (and cost), but the result is a quality fit that’s not only more comfortable but also safer. As for shells, the simplest, most affordable helmets come without vents, but we prefer them, especially when they can be opened and closed as needed. Lastly, make sure the shell is either ASTM F2040 or CE EN1077 certified—two letter-number combos that mean the lid will protect you when it counts.

All of the helmets here have vents, but none are as adjustable as the Synergy’s. Two front scoops help prevent goggle fog and channel air back. But it’s the six up top we like best: three positions (open, cracked, and shut) allow you to fine-tune the flow with the flick of a switch. 1.1 lbs
