Outside Gear Spotlight

Knog Toad, Bullfrog and Tadpole bike accessories

The Knog Bullfrog
The Knog Bullfrog

With a gallon of gas approaching four dollars, it's become even easier to justify commuting on my bike more often. But I needed something that announced my presence to those often absent-minded drivers of New Mexico (you know who you are). A quick look around the local shops led me to Knog , an Australia-based company that makes clean, modern bike accessories.

I choose the silicone-bodied (read: weather-resistant) Knog Toad for a handlebar light. Although not necessarily a "headlight" type application, this vertical 5 LED lamp provides ample white light to be seen by cars at a distance of 500 yards. For even more visibility, it offers two different flashing modes, along with a steady light feature. Using three AAA batteries, the Toad provides 220 hours of service in flashing mode.

For an easily visible rear light, the Toad's cousin, the Knog Bullfrog, provides similar light, with a vertical, bright red 5 LED pattern. What separates the Bullfrog from other seat post-mounted lights is the unique angle mount that allows light to project towards approaching cars rather than down at the pavement. Both the Toad and Bullfrog can be mounted and removed with ease, using the stretchy silicon attachment that wraps around any size handlebar or seat post. Just detach and shove into your commuter bag to keep any thieves at bay.

My bonus selection was the Knog Tadpole, which features one LED light that acts as a bar end plug. Visible from the front, this light passes through a white lens, while from the back, it passes through a red one. With a pair of these, I was visible from the sides as well as the front and the back.

With this amphibious family, the Knog Toad, Bullfrog and Tadpole, I felt safe enough to venture out in the dark and be seen by all car traffic. Now, if only drivers would learn what "share the road" means.

Knog Toad, $35; Knog Bullfrog, $28; Knog Tadpole, $30 for a pair, knogusa.com.
