Pro Surfer Stephanie Gilmore Knows the Secret to Happiness

Pro Surfer Stephanie Gilmore Knows the Secret to Happiness

When it came time to find someone for the cover of our annual happiness issue, Stephanie Gilmore jumped off the page. With six world surfing titles and a balanced outlook on life we could all learn from, the surf star lives by some pretty simple words: "I'm going to just enjoy exactly where I am." Fortunately for Gilmore, she is usually in places like Hawaii, Mexico, and Sri Lanka chasing the biggest waves she can find. We caught up with one of surfing's best photographers, Morgan Maassen, who has been shooting Gilmore for years, both on and off the water. Maassen says it best, "Stephanie always has three things on her: a magic surfboard, some sort of exotic guitar, and her golden smile."

The Wildest Dog Athletes in America

The Wildest Dog Athletes in America

Launched in 2000, Dock Dogs competitions pit canine athletes against each other in a contest to see who can leap the furthest, jump the highest, and swim the fastest. Since starting out, the young sport has grown rapidly; it now has over 10,000 participants around the world. One of the biggest events on the circuit is the Eukanuba Dock Dogs competition at the GoPro Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado, where dozens of dogs and their owners converged the weekend of June 7 to test their mettle in three different events. Many took the plunge, but only a few emerged at the head of the pack.

First Descent of the Marble Fork Gorge

First Descent of the Marble Fork Gorge

In early June, kayakers Ben Stookesberry, Chris Korbulic, and Eric Seymour joined big wall climbers Forrest Noble and Jared Johnson for an eight-day first descent of Sequoia National Park's Marble Fork gorge, once considered unrunnable. The steep, four-mile descent flowed over nine waterfalls, six of which the team ran, including one 100-footer they called the Twizzler. Sheer, overhanging walls of the Sierra Nevada rise 1,000 feet above the river and forced the team to blend kayaking with big-wall climbs and long rappels on portages to complete one of the great unfinished puzzles in California paddling.
