A 21-year veteran of the New York City Police Department drowned in a kayaking accident on Friday that left his son floating in Long Island sound and has puzzled investigators. Boaters found 5-year-old Caden Luca bobing in the water and blowing a rescue whistle one mile from the shore. His father, Patrick Luca, 41, was found dead early Saturday morning near the mouth of the Nissequogue River. Officials have little informations about how Patrick Luca died or why the inflatible kayak he was paddling might have capsized, although a Coast Guard spokesman has speculated that a large wave from a passing boat could have flipped the kayak.
