A Minnesota man appeared in U.S. District Court on Thursday to face charges of destroying the eggs of as many as 3,000 white pelicans and killing an untold number of adult pelicans, a federally protected animal. Craig Staloch admits that he destroyed the eggs and killed the birds, but says his actions should be viewed alongside the $20,000 in damage he says the pelicans caused on farmland he leased near the town of Mankato. White pelicans are making a comeback in Minnesota after widespread habitat destruction reduced their numbers in the early 20th century.
