Six teams will set sail from Alicante, Spain, tomorrow to kick off the first stage of the Volvo Ocean Race. Held every two to three years since 1973, the race will take competitiors 39,000 miles around the world with an expected finish of July, 2012. A harsh economic climate has shrunk the field from eight boats in 2008-09, and the average team has cut its spending in half, from 100 million to 50 million euros. The first stage in the competition will take sailors from Alicante to Cape Town, South Africa.
