New Law Would Ban Guns in U.S. Parks

Legislation prompted by Rainier murder

Nine legislators from the U.S. House of Representatives have introduced a bill to prohibit visitors from carrying loaded firearms into national parks. Co-sponsor Jim McDermott, a Democrat from Washington, introduced the bill in response to the January murder of ranger Margaret Anderson in Mount Rainier National Park. Guns were banned in parks until 2009. Opponents are concerned that park visitors will not be able to defend themselves against wild animals.
