If you've got money to spare and a yen for skiing somewhere other than the Rockies, book a flight to West Virginia and hit the slopes at Snowshoe Mountain Resort. It's very family-oriented, so it's a great place to spend the weekend with the kids. They can hit the bunny slopes for ski or snowboard lessons ($71 for a half-day, $126 for a full), while you can choose from among 60 runs, 15 of which are black diamonds. Ski rentals are $35 per day, $31 for kids. Hit the Bear Claw and Flying Eagle runs for steepness (4,848 feet), and go to Silver Creek for less crowds and wider slopes. Take a lunch break at Red Rover for wine and hot dogs, go out and play again, wind down with beer and barbecue at Foxfire Grille, then pass out at Rimfire Lodge just a few steps away ($399.10 for a standard room for the weekend).
