Before last May's U.S. Canoe and Kayak whitewater slalom trials on the Ocoee River in Tennessee, canoeist Jon Lugbill told a friend he couldn't remember the last time he showed up at the start and wasn't sure he'd win. Back from a three-year retirement, 34-year-old Lugbill needn't have worried. His first run was acceptable, but his second made his old pals despise him: "He improved his time five seconds,'' a coach noted. Officially, Lugbill, who took first, is undecided for next year's Games in Atlanta. Of course, most take that to mean one thing: See you there.
