Travel Guide, Winter 1995-1996
To find the other Belize, beach your kayak and head inland to Ek' Tun, a new lodge two hours west of Belize City. Hike, canoe, or ride horses around the resort's 200 acres to see outlandish plants like the give-and-take palm (its spines cause painful cuts, but its sap heals wounds), pre-Columbian caves housing Mayan altars, and secluded mountain waterfalls. The digs are regal: two palm-thatched cottages furnished with antiques, and a lantern-lit dining pavilion. The price is $214 per day for two, including all meals; pickup service from Belize City is $125. For reservations, call 303-442-6150.
