Q: Crater Lake Lodge has been closed for years for renovation and I believe it has reopened but I can find no information about it. Do you have any?

Crater Lake

A: You're right, Crater Lake Lodge finally reopened last May after being closed for renovation in 1989. Built in 1908, the lodge--at 7,100 feet--wasn't designed to withstand the mind-boggling 600 inches of snowfall it got on average each year. In 1988 it was declared structurally unsound and underwent a top-to-bottom overhaul. Now only the ground floor is part of the original building.

Located on the east side of Rim Village in Crater Lake National Park, the 71-room lodge is open to visitors from May 18 to October 19. Doubles range from $105 for a first-floor room to $122 for a lakeside room. They take reservations up to two years in advance, so it's a good idea to call well ahead of time. Most dates for this July and August are already booked. Call 541-830-8700 for reservations or, for general park information, call the visitor center at 541-594-2211.
