The Route: A five- to 12-day expedition by kayak or sailboat along the remote coastline of a new 800,000-acre park created by American clothing mogul Doug Tompkins, with hikes to old-growth forests and hot springs.

When to go: November to March

Difficulty: Moderate

Travel advisory: Stronger kayakers should choose the Altue Expeditions or Latin American Escapes trips, which have several long point-to-point paddling legs. Ecolé clients make only short day-trips from the mother ship, a 65-foot sailboat.

High/low points:

  • Soaking in Cahuelmó Hot Springs, rock hot tubs carved by ancient Indians.
  • Discovering at 4 a.m. that you have pitched your tent below the notoriously fickle high-tide line.
