Horseback Riding in Gaucho Country

Outfitter Departures Price Accommodations
Estancia La Calera
011-598-260-8708
On demand $590 camping, rustic lodging

The Route: Stay for a week at Estancia La Calera, a 22,000-acre fifth-generation family ranch on the pampa northwest of Montevideo. A three-night camping excursion by horseback to neighboring ranches is included.

When to go: Year-round

Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Travel advisory: Learn some Spanish before you go; although the ranch owners speak good English, the gauchos don't. Basic riding skills won't hurt, either.

High/low points:

  • Galloping on your nimble little Criollo horse past a thundering herd of 800 cows.
  • Jumping off your horse to stretch your legs, only to land near a coiled rattlesnake.
