Favorite Shot?In 2011, Bethany Olson (@bethanyolson), a Seattle-based photographer, joined Instagram and was immediately drawn to the square images of another Northwest photographer named Cory Staudacher (@withhearts). After a few years of random encounters, the two are now a couple. Relentlessly exploring and photographing the Northwest, Bethany and Cory share their best images on Instagram. Fortunately for us, they have quite a collection.
@withhearts: My favorite image I’ve taken is this photo of sun-rays shooting out behind Bethany. When you hit the very edge of fog and sun it creates a really cool display of light.
Favorite Shot?@bethanyolson: Cory and I went to Lake Cushman for the weekend, and it was unlike any other. We were speechless the whole time while taking photos with the amazing light, fog, and snow that surrounded the lake. It was an unforgettable weekend.
Tool of Choice?@withhearts: I shoot my Instagram photos with my iPhone 5S.
Tool of Choice?@bethanyolson: I shoot with a 4S- upgrading to the 5S soon though! And I don’t use any add-ons. I just use the camera that’s on my phone!
What's Your Filter?@withhearts: I use VSCO cam app, and my favorite filter is S2 or M5.
What's Your Filter?@bethanyolson: I use a couple different apps to edit with, such as VSCO, Faded, Snapseed, Afterlight, and Filterstorm. My favorite at the moment would have to be the filter from VSCO called M5.
Pro Tip?@withhearts: Be you, shoot what makes you happy, get inspired by people around you, push the boundaries of what is possible, and engage your community.
Pro Tip?@bethanyolson: Explore, explore, explore! Get out of your normal box and experiment with light, locations, and framing. Also, Instagram is based around community. So reach out to people that inspire you and follow people with different styles.
Story behind your biggest hit?@withhearts: One of my most liked photos is this image from one of my favorite spots, the Vans Creek Bridge outside of Seattle, Washington. We found out about it from some locals, and the shot blew up on Instagram with more than 17,000 likes.
Story behind your biggest hit?@bethanyolson: My most liked photo is actually a portrait that I posted of myself that Cory took of me. I’m standing on a stump at Lake Cushman wearing a red flannel, advertising some clothes I bought from one of my favorite brands. I had no idea that it would get 7,800-plus likes.
iPhone or DSLR?@withhearts: I usually shoot with my iPhone first and then take the photo with my Canon 5D Mark III.
iPhone or DSLR?@bethanyolson: Usually when I’m shooting portraits of someone, I will do that on my SLR, and then I will bring out my phone and take a couple on there toward the end of the shoot. Otherwise if we’re exploring, sometimes I totally forget to bring out my SLR and take photos because I’m focused on getting a photo for Instagram. I’m still learning how to balance the two.
