Take a Pit Stop in Harrison, Idaho

On day two, head north on Highways 3 and 97 and stop in Harrison to ride part of the 72-mile paved Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes (bike rentals from $28). Then spend the night in a Depression-era log cabin with modern utilities in Heyburn State Park, the oldest in the Pacific Northwest ($50).

Ride the Four Mile Ridge Trail

The next day, head north on Route 153 and continue west on the North Cascades Highway to wind your way through the toothy peaks of North Cascades National Park. At the coast, take Interstate 5 to Mount Vernon, where you can hike the 6.5-mile Oyster Dome Trail to Pacific views. Then set up 20 minutes northwest in a Bay View State Park cabin as the sun sets over the San Juans ($69).
