Rock jock Sara Carlson in Joshua Tree National Park
JAMES WHITE, who has shot beauties like Scarlett Johansson and Kate Winslet, photographed climber Sara Carlson for this month's Outside cover. California's Joshua Tree National Park served as backdrop. "I was having these Edward Weston moments," says the Los Angelesbased lensman, referring to the 20th-century abstract photographer whose classic black-and-white nudes capture the elemental link between skin and landscape. White used a medium-format camera with a 90mm lens, exposing 320-speed film for 1/125 second at f/5.6.
Before landing her current full-time position at the nonprofit Cougar Fund, in Jackson Hole, the 27-year-old Carlson juggled a host of part-time jobs and summited the Grand Teton three times. She still escapes to local crags whenever she can. "I'm trying to be an adult and still go climbing," says the native of Ishpeming, Michigan. This shot was exposed for half a second at f/5.6 with a 90mm lens; the image opposite, 1/125 second at f/8 with a 140mm lens.
