THE SELL: A big-load hauler with external storage options galore. THE TEST: The 60-liter Versteeg distinguished itself the old-fashioned way—by being so damn accommodating. Need to quickly stash a shell and hat? Reach back and slip them in the hammock-like side pockets. Want to keep blister salve or a water filter handy? Store them in one of two removable Dopp-kit-like side pouches, which (conveniently) can turn into a waist belt to create a lumbar pack for day trips. It's not perfect: side-zip access would be nice, and some testers complained that the hipbelt felt flimsy when fully loaded. THE VERDICT: Steady and user-friendly. 5.2 lbs
Hauling comfort: 55 pounds
Versatility: 3
