The 6 Best Ski and Snowboard Helmets of 2013

Bolle Synergy Helmet

All of the helmets here have vents, but none are as adjustable as the Synergy’s. Two front scoops help prevent goggle fog and channel air back. But it’s the six up top we like best: three positions (open, cracked, and shut) allow you to fine-tune the flow with the flick of a switch. 1.1 lbs

Smith Gage Helmet

It’s just the basics here, with 12 vents and a simple fit system. While the vents could do a better job at cooling you off and the chin strap is a bit chintzy, at this price it’s hard to complain. 1 lb

Lazer Dissent Helmet

We’ve been wearing (and loving) Lazer bike helmets for years, and the Dissent marks the company’s first foray into snow sports. It has all the amenities—adjustable fit, audio compatibility, removable brim, and optional built-in GoPro mount ($10). But the smartest feature is a magnetic buckle in the chin strap that makes securing the Dissent with gloved fingers a cinch. 1 lb

Are you constantly filming your buddies at the hill? The Dissent is the first helmet we've seen with an optional integrated GoPro mount.

Scott Couloir Mountain Helmet

Fourteen airy vents make the Couloir the most breathable helmet here. Removing the liner and ear pads makes it even cooler, and there’s a headlamp-retainer slit for alpine starts. All that and it’s just as light as the other helmets here. Best for the backcountry bound. 1 lb

Giro Battle Helmet

With an adjustable fit system, a generously padded and audio-compatible ear liner, and eight well-placed vents, the Battle has all the features we look for—at half the price of comparable lids. 1.1 lbs

POC Fornix Helmet

The Fornix has an internal structure made from molded Aramid strands, similar to Kevlar, POC claims it disperses impacts evenly across the entire helmet, even with sharp hits on one side. Smart: two front vents direct air downward to help prevent goggle fogging. 15 oz
