Ecco's Women's Boulder GTX ($140; eccousa.com) is a lightweight Gore-Tex shoe with a beefy rubber outsole that can handle just about any crud you can throw its way, including a mix of rock and ice on the ascent of my favorite local hill, Picacho Peak. In addition to the stability, the Boulder GTX also has a lightweight EVA midsole and elastic laces that have a very secure plastic cinching mechanism, which ensures your foot doesn't slip around—ever.

I'm always a fan of Salomon trail shoes for winter running. The latest model is the XR Crossmax ($130; salomon.com). With versions specific for neutral and pronation-prone runners who want to put on a lot of miles, the XR Crossmax takes advantage of new compounds and geometry for better "runnability" and a new "Sensiflex" technology, which is a soft, stretchy liner welded inside the shoe that allows the foot to flex in critical areas. The shoe is made on a women's-specific last and comes with all the regular Salomon perks like the stretch air mesh, a key pocket incorporated into the laces, and the "Quicklace" system—a bungy-like elastic cord that cinches and secures the shoe in seconds.
