Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia set the world record for the 1500 meters at the Monaco Diamond League on Friday, the race website reported. The 24-year-old ran 3:50.07, breaking the former record, set in 1993, by .39 seconds.
“Last week I ran 3:54, and it felt comfortable,” Dibaba told the International Association of Athletics Federations on Tuesday regarding her performance in Barcelona on July 8. “Tomorrow I’m looking to run faster. I don’t know how much faster, but I’m going to go for it.”
In the same race, American Shannon Rowbury of the Nike Oregon Project set an American record of 3:56.29, which bettered Mary Slaney’s best of 3:57.12 from 1983. Eight of the top nine athletes set personal bests or area records in the race.
