A 23-year-old inmate escaped from Norway’s Bastøy Prison by stealing a surfboard and a toy spade, which he used to paddle nearly two miles, Norweigian-English news source the Local reported Wednesday.

Bastøy, located on a 642-acre island, offers an alternative approach to prison, complete with unbarred windows and opportunities for outdoor recreation, including fishing, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. The inmate, who’d been serving time for rape and narcotics, snuck out of a window, stole an old surfboard and toy shovel, and paddled to the mainland. He abandoned the board at the shore of Horten, a town in southeastern Norway, and has not been seen since.
