Skechers announced on Thursday that it had become the title sponsor of the Los Angeles Marathon, according to a press release. The L.A. Marathon, which will hold its 31st annual competition on February 14, 2016, is one of the top five largest marathons in the U.S. and top ten in the world.
“As a Los Angeles-based business, we have always wanted to be a part of this iconic race since we began developing our performance footwear division,” said Michael Greenberg, president of Skechers, in the release. “We could not be more thrilled to join the Los Angeles Marathon as title sponsor.”
The news came just months after Skechers became the number two brand in the U.S. in athletic footwear. The company currently sponsors Olympic silver medalist Meb Keflezighi and world silver medalist Kara Goucher.
Besides its prominence in American marathons, the L.A. Marathon will also host the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon, the deciding event for the U.S. national team that will compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The trial will take place on Saturday, February 13, the day before the marathon.
