Audience Engagement Editor

We're looking to hire an audience engagement editor with a strong audience background who isn't afraid to shake things up. Can you find creative ways to grow and maintain Outside’s reader base? Want to craft editorial newsletter series, spearhead our daily social media posting, and bring a new level of engagement and loyalty to all of our platforms? Are you interested in growing into a managerial role? This might be the job for you.  

Primary responsibilities:

  • Grow and manage the editorial side of Outside’s newsletter program, including writing, editing, building, and scheduling newsletters and producing voicey, on-brand copy for products such as re-engagement campaigns and welcome series. This involves close collaboration with our email marketing specialist.

  • Workshop display and SEO headlines alongside editors and the rest of the audience team for all digital content and schedule stories in our CMS for publication on the site.

  • Schedule organic and marketing content for all social channels (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) using native platform publishing and third-party tools like SocialFlow on a daily basis.

  • Report and track traffic and engagement growth using metrics from social media and newsletter dashboards, Google Analytics, and

  • Collaborate closely with the audience development director on high-level strategy such as promotion plans for product launches, editorial brainstorms for vertical strategies, and new audience projects that will win us the social media Ellie award.

  • Manage the email address and assess pitches.


  • At least two years of full-time editorial experience at a digital publication. Experience as an audience editor strongly preferred.

  • Proficient Google Analytics and experience. Experience with SocialFlow, Adobe Creative Suite, and HTML a plus.

  • Experience using email service providers. Experience with Sailthru a plus.

  • Strong writing chops and ability to produce clean copy quickly.

The Outside Fellowship Program

Outside offers paid six-month fellowships at our headquarters in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We have four different fellowship roles—editorial, production, audience development, and video production—all of which include working closely with top editors on everything from fact-checking long-form features to building stories, editing videos, and helping develop social-media strategies.
