During his address to the Boy Scouts of America at their national jamboree on Sunday, Donald Trump began to recite the Scout Law. Unfortunately, he only made it to the second item. Let’s lay it out in full, along with ways in which the honorary President of the BSA failed to follow the law in his own speech.
A Scout Is Trustworthy
“A Scout tells the truth,” reads the Scout Law. On June 25, the New York Times ran a comprehensive list of every verifiable lie Trump had told in-office thus far. It took an entire page. Trump even lied in his speech to the Boy Scouts, again making false claims about the size of the crowd in attendance at his inauguration, and about voter fraud.
A Scout Is Loyal
“A Scout is true to his family, Scout leaders, friends, school, and nation.” Trump used the jamboree speech as an excuse to further disparage his Attorney General, Eagle Scout Jeff Sessions, for recusing himself in the ongoing investigation into Trump’s alleged collusion with our nation’s enemies on last year’s campaign trail.
A Scout Is Helpful
“A Scout does things willingly for others without pay or reward.” Trump used the speech to again call for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, a move that will deny millions of Americans access to healthcare, in order to provide tax breaks for a few wealthy Americans.
A Scout Is Friendly
“A Scout respects those with ideas and customs other than his own.” Trump encouraged the children in attendance to boo fellow Boy Scouts, a Girl Scout, and a former President.
A Scout Is Courteous
“A Scout is polite to everyone regardless of age or position.” Trump repeatedly disparaged his former opponent, Hillary Clinton, throughout the speech.
A Scout Is Kind
“A Scout treats others as he wants to be treated.” Trump used the speech to mock a businessman—William Levitt—who had fallen on hard times.
A Scout Is Obedient
“A Scout obeys the laws of his community and country.” Trump spoke of a need for more loyalty in his speech: if this was a reference to James Comey, then what Trump was actually doing was bringing up his own alleged obstruction of justice.
A Scout Is Cheerful
“A Scout looks for the bright side of things.” And Trump’s tone was cheerful—as he recounted the efforts of his cabinet to reduce or eliminate protections for the environment and to open our National Parks and other public lands up for energy extraction.
A Scout Is Thrifty
“A Scout protects and conserves natural resources." In his speech, Trump lauded efforts to re-invest in coal mining in states like West Virginia. As an energy source, coal has repeatedly proven to be inefficient and uneconomic and has largely fallen out of favor due to those market forces.
A Scout Is Brave
“A Scout has the courage to stand up for what’s right even if other laugh at or threaten him.” Trump repeatedly made reference to “fake news,” a tag he applies to any unfavorable reporting.
A Scout Is Clean
“A Scout keeps his body and mind fit." In a speech exclusively attended by minors, Trump made allusions to drunkenness and group sex.
A Scout Is Reverent
“A Scout respects the beliefs of others.” Trump discussed the “War on Christmas,” a thinly veiled dispersion of non-Christian belief systems.
