Welcome to the Outside Developer Blog

How is this site built? What tools help our developers? What are some of the best practices? What have we learned?

The questions above are some of the reasons why we are starting this developer column. We want to share with the community and the world some of what we have learned while building Outside Online so that, if the time ever comes for you to build your own site, you have the resources to succeed. As developers, we run into problems and challenges every day - from optimizing our page load to deliver the fastest possible experience to crafting beautiful designs that work on all devices. In the course of solving these problems, we often learn new skills, new API calls, new functionality, and new ways to work smarter, better, and more efficiently.

Outside Online is built off of Drupal, an open source content management system, where we have extended Drupal with custom modules, themes, and designs. Our site has been upgraded and enhanced to provided an extremely fast load time, designs optimized for all devices, and many more features so that the experience you have on Outside Online is the best possible version.

Stay tuned for more posts about developing at Outside Online, from tutorials to informational rundowns. We hope this is a resource for you as you work on your own projects.
