Purchasing gear isn’t exactly a political act. But what we buy has an impact beyond swiping a debit card. Take the renewed debate around guns after the shooting in Parkland, Florida. REI and other retailers stopped carrying Vista Outdoor brands (like CamelBak and Giro) because Vista owns a manufacturer of semiautomatic weapons. The decision was precipitated by a petition with some 24,000 signatures. Companies respond to that kind of passion from their customers, and some may flex their economic muscle in the same way. So the next time you buy a kayak, wind shell, or climbing harness, consider where your money’s going. Ideally, the companies you support share your values and will fight for the causes you both believe in.
