Patagonia’s Performance Twill is one of our favorite pairs of do-anything jeans. The lightweight cotton-polyester blend is “stretchy but also works to wick moisture away from the inside and repels moisture from the outside,” we wrote. Plus, the pants are sewn using Fair Trade Certified practices.
Opt to Act for Life Outdoors
For the last five years, REI has closed its doors on Black Friday, encouraging employees and customers to #OptOutside. This year, when we #OptOutside, let’s all Opt to Act. Share why you Opt to Act to get others on board.
Join us on Black Friday to be part of a nationwide cleanup—kicking off a year of action. Together, let’s start something big just by getting out and cleaning up.
Not sure how to get involved? It’s simple: Go outside, clean up, and leave that place in the world better than you found it. For more inspiration, check out these tips from United By Blue and Leave No Trace.
The one-day nationwide cleanup is just the start. Check out REI's Opt to Act Plan for 52 weeks of simple actions you can take to leave the world better than you found it.
If you’re looking for more ways to help the world, be mindful of your consumption. We take, we use, we toss. And then we do it again. And again. This is contributing to destroying the outdoors we love and so desperately need. It’s time to act.
When it comes to reducing impact, REI knows individual choices aren’t the whole story. Businesses need to act too. That’s why REI is working to radically reduce waste throughout their business and calling on the outdoor industry to join them.
Zipper pulls are the weak link of any jacket or bag. We’ve saved a couple of different pieces of luggage with these replacement ones from MSR—simply girth-hitch them through the zipper after the original pull tab breaks off and you’re good to go.
This performance flannel looks classic, but has a modern twist with its cotton-polyester blend. The shirt’s relaxed fit and brushed cotton feels cozy, while the 30 percent polyester helps wick moisture and offer stretch. We especially like the pearl snaps that add a classy touch.
The Breeze III was our top choice hiker for the weekend warrior in our 2017 Summer Buyer’s Guide. This boot mixes between a light-duty shoe and a beefy backpacker, thanks to mid-ankle support, a Gore-Tex membrane, and perforated toe and heel vents.
The Rose has been tester Kassondra Cloos’s favorite base-layer top for the past three years. “I’ve worn it skiing in Colorado and Wyoming, backpacking in rainy conditions in Colombia, working in the office, and while sleeping,” wrote Cloos. The soft merino wool is warm and cozy, while the deep half zip and thinner side panels allow venting.
We recommended this strap in our 2019 Holiday Gift Guide. Topo Designs uses sections of 10.5mm climbing rope to create this sturdy strap. The design also adds a tasteful outdoorsy touch. “It’s lightweight but will hold a camera no matter the adventure,” we wrote.
Topo Designs is known for its high-quality construction and sleek aesthetic. This colorful number uses cozy Polartec fabric and reinforced elbow patches for comfort and durability. We like wearing the Mountain Fleece around town, snuggled up at home, or under a rain shell for a quick day hike. Plus, the material is 100-percent recycled.
Our Gear Guy has yet to find a koozie that keeps beverages frosty for longer than the Colster. Its vacuum insulation traps cold air, and the stainless-steel wrap protects your brewski—to an extent—if you drop it. That’s why this insulator is our go-to drink accessory for campground kickbacks.
Gear tester Andrew Skurka ran over 300 miles in these shoes and found them best for easy rolling singletrack. “Because of those 4mm lugs,” Skurka wrote, “this shoe has also become my go-to for bike lanes, pea-gravel trails, and dirt roads that are muddy or covered in snow.”
This 36-ounce vacuum bottle seals completely, so you can throw it in your bag without worrying about spillage. It comes with a leakproof lid, but if you prefer easy-drinking access, a straw and chug-cap top are also available.
