The idea behind the all-new 4xFAR live music and adventure festival presented by Land Rover this January 18–19 in Coachella Valley, California, is pretty simple: to celebrate the relaunch of the legendary brand’s most iconic adventuremobile, the Defender. It will be the first chance for consumers to experience the all-new 2020 Land Rover Defender on a legit purpose-built off-road test course. But that’s just the start. There’s also an all-star and eclectic music lineup that includes Anderson .Paak & the Free Nationals, Mark Ronson B2B Q-Tip, Young the Giant, Kurt Vile & the Violators, and many more.
And then there’s the adventure component, which is where we come in. We’ve partnered with Land Rover—and many of our other favorite brands and guides— to create an adventure village featuring 25 activities and guided workshops, including slacklining, rock climbing, mountain biking, campsite mixology, navigation and wilderness safety, overlanding, and more. If you're curious, here are eight more reasons this is going to be the best winter festival around.
The Venue Is Brand-New—and It’s Incredible
4xFAR will take place in the heart of Coachella Valley at the Empire Grand Oasis, the newest and most stunning desert venue to emerge in years. The newly expanded and updated grounds encompass 35 acres of lush playground, ripe for adventure. The intimate site features palm groves, art installations, and a freshwater lake (sorry, no swimming) along with a magnificent waterfall and countless nooks to explore, discover, and chill out in.
The Test Drive Course Is for Real
With a 15-acre, purpose-built off-road test track site featuring rock-crawl features, sandpits, and tons of other challenging obstacles right at the heart of 4xFAR, attendees can put the entire lineup of Land Rover vehicles, including the 2020 Defender, through their paces. The course is split into two sections: one where you can ride along with professional drivers as they navigate more extreme terrain and a second where you can take the wheel and experience firsthand the Defender and its slew of intelligent off-road features and unmatched capability.
The Live Music Lineup Is Studded with Stars
Headliners include Grammy Award-winning Anderson .Paak & the Free Nationals and Mark Ronson B2B Q-Tip, as well as two-time Grammy-nominated live electronic duo Sofi Tukker. The rest of the genre-jumping lineup includes Young the Giant, former War on Drugs front man turned solo artist Kurt Vile with his band the Violators, and British-Japanese electronic house producer Maya Janes Coles. Chappaqua Wrestling, LP Giobbi, Mahalia, and Tijuana Panthers round out the weekend’s lineup. You Can Learn Everything About Overlanding (and Tons of Other Stuff, Too)
That’s right, there will be 25 different kinds of classes and experiences throughout the weekend, on everything from overlanding basics (how to rig your Defender for backcountry travel) to fly-fishing. Other workshops include Foraging and Edible Plants as well as Tread Lightly, where you’ll learn how to off-road responsibly.
You’ll Be Able to Climb, Do Yoga, and Mountain Bike—All in the Same Day
But that’s not all. You can also try out ax throwing, slacklining, outdoor cooking, and much more.
Top Outdoor Brands Will Be Demoing the Latest and Greatest Gear
Sony will have cameras and professional photographer Stan Moniz on hand leading outdoor photography workshops. Niner Bikes will have gravel and mountain bikes to demo, and Salomon ambassador Kalen Thorien will be leading workshops on trail running, car camping, and map reading.
You Can Meet Laird Hamilton and Other Luminaries of Our World
The lineup of speakers and personalities is as eclectic and high-powered as the musical acts, and includes former professional skier Lindsey Vonn, fitness icon Gabby Reece, and TV personality Sal Masekela, all of whom will be engaging in a series of fireside-style chats throughout the weekend.
There Will Be Excellent Craft Beer, Wine, and Cocktails
Samplings and tasting opportunities include wine from Sonoma-based West + Wilder and FitVine and mixology classes with High Camp Flask.
