Bear Necessities

If you think those Yellowstone grizzlies are scary, wait until you come face to fang with an aggressive raccoon, which will shred a backpack at the first whiff of flank steak or lip balm. So the rule is simple: All fragrant items go skyward at night. Select a site
100 feet from camp with two trees roughly 20 feet apart. Throw one end of a line over a branch 15 feet up and tie off the other end to the trunk. At the second tree, throw the free end of the line over an equally high limb and let the line sag between the two trees. Tie the bag to the middle of the line, and then hoist it as high as possible, tying off the line to the second
trunk.
